Just my Drum, her Accordion and brother and sister sharing an experience of what people have to live through everyday.

Q

serafroepoder asked:

Hello! I was wondering what is the meaning behind this beautiful white makeup in your culture?

A

Thank you for asking,

Throughout Africa, all aspects of traditional makeup share different meaning, but for the National Ballet of Congo I represent (formed in the 1950’s), the Bantu tribes of Brazzaville use(d) the white to symbolize the spirit. One of the co-founders was my father, Le Grand Elombe Badila.

Spirit lives in and throughout our realm and guides us for the prosperity of our now and future. There are other colors, Yellow (Sun that provides our light, our energy) Green (Earth we cultivate) and Red (Blood of our people) that we wear but Personally since my father died 2 years ago, Ive worn only white in homage to his spirit that guides me in performance.

Thank You
